What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been practiced for thousands of years. Acupuncture hieroglyphics were found in 476B.C. What can I expect on my first acupuncture appointment?
You will be asked to arrive early to your appointment to complete paperwork on the iPad. After completing your paperwork you will be shown to the treatment room. The acupuncturist will spend time with you asking and answering questions. You will be asked to lay on the treatment table to begin your treatment. The acupuncturist may check your pulse on your wrist and ask to look at your tongue. The customized treatment will then be performed insuring comfort and care as the top priority. The acupuncturist will allow you to relax for 15-45 minutes with the needles inserted. The length of time will depend upon what your body needs. Most individuals tend to fall asleep during this time. The needles will then be removed. The acupuncturist will explain the treatment plan designed for you and answer any further questions.
What is acupuncture? How does it work?
Acupuncture is the insertion of hair-fine needles into specific points on the body that have been researched over thousands of years. The points are each designed to treat a certain ailment or body function. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the body is sculpted into twelve energy pathways. It is believed when one is ill that pathways are disrupted or blocked. The use of acupuncture needles helps to smooth out the flow of energy throughout the entire body.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Many people have a fear of needles due to the pain we have experienced with the only type of needle we know, SHOTS! OUCH! That is not the experience with acupuncture needles. Needles come in all different sizes including acupuncture needles. At Madrid Acupuncture we strive to provide a comfortable experience. Therefore we only use very thin needles. Acupuncture needles are hair-fine. Most people experience a small sensation when the needle is initially inserted and after insertion the needle can hardly be felt. We walk each patient through the process and insure your comfortable at all times. If needles are not for you we can find alternative methods to provide treatment.
What is therapeutic massage?
Therapeutic massage is a manual treatment that manipulates constricted muscles and soft tissues of the body. This type of massage can address specific structural dysfunctions, reduce muscular tension and relieve pain. Massage can improve circulation throughout the body promoting tissue regeneration and injury recovery.
Does therapeutic massage hurt?

What can I expect on my first massage appointment?
You will be asked to arrive early to your appointment to complete paperwork. After completing your paperwork you will be shown to the treatment room. The massage therapist will ask questions on your intention for massage as well as answering any questions you may have. The massage therapist will ask you to lay face up or face down on the table. The therapist will leave the room as you undress to your comfort level and get under the sheet to prepare for your massage. They will knock on the door before re-entering the room to ensure your are comfortable and completely covered. Once you give the therapist permission to enter the room your massage will begin. The massage therapist will communicate about massage pressure and processes. They will inform you if they want you to turn over while appropriately draping you. Please communicate any questions or discomfort. When your massage is complete the therapist will exit the room and allow you to get dressed. You will meet the therapist at the front desk to pay and schedule your next massage.
Do I have to leave a tip?
Massage therapists do accept tips. We ask you tip based on what you feel appropriate for the service you received. Average tip is 10-30% of the treatment cost. Tips are not required but highly recommended and appreciated. Thank you!
Do I have to undress for massage?
You will be asked to undress to your comfort level. We recommend removing clothing to allow the therapist to palpate the muscles and manipulate the tissue. If you are uncomfortable removing your clothes we can accommodate and work over your clothes.
Can I request certain areas to be avoided?
Absolutely! Please communicate with your therapist if you do not want a certain area to be massaged. Many people request avoiding massage on the feet, face or scalp. We are a professional massage clinic and provide NONsexual therapeutic massage. We will not work with anyone who is behaving inappropriately or requesting inappropriate behaviors.
